The compressor in my 1999 Beetle gave out last year. At just about 72,000 miles, it was a little early to bite the dust, but this car has had so much wrong with it since I bought it used in 2002 that another major problem didn't surprise me too much. Since I had just spent a couple hundred bucks on the car, I didn't have the money to get it fixed and decided I would have to could live without AC.

Then came the plan to go to lovely Kentucky in July to join my dear penpal  [personal profile] badkatpatfor the opening night of OotP at the Imax in Louisville. There was no way I was going to drive all the way up there without AC, but hubby said I could drive his new Kia Spectra, so I would be okay - or so I thought until I drove that car for an hour the other day. I got out of the thing with the worst backpain I've had in a long time. There was no way I was going to drive all the way up there in those uncomfortable seats! Well, fortunately, I'd made more money than expected at the ITB Berlin, so I caved and had the compressor replaced.

$960 later, my car has been successfully turned into an icebox, which I know I'll greatly appreciate once the humidity climbs to 80% and higher - but my CD player has died. :( There is no way I'm going to drive for 10 hours without music, so I called a couple of car stereo places around here as well as our local VW dealer. Same info everywhere: new radio costs between $250-300. The guy at the audio shop here in town even told me there is no guarantee a new radio will work with the CD changer and I'd need to get a new one of those, too - for just a couple hundred bucks more. Right!!!

Thank goodness there's eBay! With a little luck, I can get a
used original AM/FM/cassette/CD unit for around $100. Cross fingers for me!!!!
